There’s a first time for everything, and when it comes to a spray tan it can feel a little awkward stripping down and getting bare for a stranger. So with that in mind – here’s the best way to get prepped and ready to make sure your spray tan experience is one for the books.
How does a spray tan work?
A spray tan is a form of sunless tanning which gives you the ultimate golden glow through a gentle mist being sprayed on your body. The mist has an ingredient called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which interacts with your body’s natural chemistry to create the perfect tan. Results usually last anywhere from 3-7 days, and the process is completely safe. Spray tans are usually applied in small booths using airbrushes which allow your body to get a nice, even coating.
How do I prepare for a spray tan?
To prepare, remove any unwanted body hair from your body and exfoliate thoroughly right before your appointment. Home appointments are really convenient in this case as you can jump out of the shower and into the Spray Tan booth right away. Prepping your skin correctly will allow the spray tan to adhere more evenly. It is also recommended that you don’t use any perfumes, deodorants, oils or lotions anywhere on your body before your spray tan, as these can affect the application.
What should I wear before and after my appointment?
It is really important to make sure you are wearing loose, comfortable black clothing – including cotton underwear. This will make it less likely for the tan to transfer on to your clothing, and easier to remove if it does. Sandals or open-toed shoes are a must as anything too tight may strip the tan off your feet before you even get home! Again, this is why a Spray Tan at home is so much more convenient. You can just put on an old robe or pyjamas while waiting for the tan to develop and you don’t have to worry about getting your regular clothes dirty.
How long do I need to wait, and how dark will I get?
Majority of spray tans develop over 8hrs, that’s why most people will book them in the evening, before they go to bed. There are also express tans which can develop in 1-2hrs, and are perfect for a last minute touch up before holiday or before an event. Also perfect if you don’t have the patience to wait 8hrs (a’hem, us 🙋🏻♀️😅). Your beautician will bring a selection of shades to choose from, some lighter, some darker, and you can decide which one suits your skin colour the most. You can also opt to take off the tan sooner, if you prefer a lighter sun-kissed look.
What do I do after my spray tan to prolong it?
Making sure you shower effectively is key to prolonging your tan. Use lukewarm water, try to avoid scrubbing, and don’t use any products that will leave residue on the skin as they may strip the colour sooner than you would like. When getting out of the shower, be sure to pat your skin dry with your towel rather than rub to ensure you maintain that even glow.
