A guide to after waxing care

Everyone remembers their first wax. It can feel scary and uncertain, especially if you’ve only ever used a razor.

For those of you who are thinking about switching to waxing, or have already booked your first appointment, we’ve put together an essential post-care guide to get you through your first wax and beyond.

How long does waxing last?

professional leg waxing at home by uspaah

The length of time a wax lasts will depend on the body area being waxed and how quickly your hair grows. For example, a leg wax may last up to six weeks whilst bikini waxes may need refreshing after three to four weeks.

After you’ve had your first waxing treatment, you will quickly learn what is right for your body and lifestyle. As a starting point, most waxing therapists will recommend between four to six weeks between treatments, then once you have learnt how quickly your hair regrows you can re-book in the right time frame for you.

How to make your skin softer for longer

Exfoliating regularly is the key to soft, smooth skin when you’ve waxed. One of the easiest ways to incorporate regular (and gentle!) exfoliation into your skincare routine is to use an exfoliating glove in the shower. When you exfoliate two – three times a week, you will remove dead skin and crucially, prevent ingrown hairs. Treat yourself to a rich moisturiser afterwards to make your skin feel silky soft.

How do you treat skin after waxing?

After your wax, the area may be a little red and tender which is completely normal. Try to avoid tight-fitting clothes to your waxing service and the next day to not cause friction and irritate your skin. As a general rule, for the first 24 hours avoid exfoliation or applying any deodorants, make-up or soaps to the area.

How do I make my skin smooth after waxing?

Maintaining a regular exfoliation and moisturising routine in the weeks after your wax will help keep your skin smooth after waxing. Plus, don’t forget to book your next appointment to maintain a regular schedule to avoid getting caught out and shaving in between waxes, which can impact the regrowth of the hair.

Once you try waxing with USPAAH and experience the long-lasting soft effects, you will never go back, especially with our handy care guide.

Keep Your Skin Vibrant & Healthy This Summer

For most people, summer is all about hot weather, holidays, pub gardens and having fun. But while you’re having the time of your life, your skin may not be.

Dry and humid conditions and even fans or air-conditioning can cause irritation to your skin, leaving your face looking dull and drier than normal. Read on for tips on facial care and keeping your skin healthy this summer.

Why is my face dry in the summer?

Some people associate dry skin with the winter, but the hot summer months can also create dryness and flakey skin. If you’re on holiday, sun exposure and chlorine can also dry out your skin. Hot weather can increase water loss from the body, which leads to dehydrated skin. The best way to avoid dry skin in the summer is to drink plenty of water, at least 2 litres a day to keep you hydrated from the inside out.

How can I keep my face healthy in summer?

To keep your skin healthy this summer, invest in a skincare routine that works for you. A good quality oil-based balm will remove any makeup or dirt on your face. Using a chemical or physical exfoliant afterwards will eat away at dead skin cells, for that summer glow. Facial mists are also a great way to give you skin an instant boost on the go.

Facial hydration for summer

To keep your face hydrated this summer, moisturising is key. If you suffer from dry skin, go in with a thick serum first, and then follow with a lightweight moisturiser. Using an eye cream is an essential step to prevent ageing. The last step should always be SPF. It’s a non-negotiable all year round to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

If you’re looking for luxury, then a professional facial can be a great way to ensure your skin is healthy this summer. After a consultation, a skincare specialist will tailor treatments to you, dealing with any problem areas. Plus, facial massage is a great way to unwind after a long day.

If you’re looking for a facial treatment at home to keep your skin healthy, book online, download our app, or just contact a member of our team on 02071013534. And get a personal, mobile spa service within an hour of your booking.

Spray tan in the summer – why & how

There’s no denying that we all love a healthy glow in the summer. Sadly, in the UK, hot and sunny days can be sporadic (and rare), and overexposure can be very damaging and ageing for our skin.

Sunless tanning is the perfect solution for the ultimate bronzed glow this summer. Here’s our must-read guide to getting the ultimate spray tan that actually lasts:

Should you get a spray tan before your holiday?

Imagine walking off the plane to your chosen holiday destination, with a gorgeous glowing and even tan before you even hit the beach. On vacation, you always want to look you best. That’s why a spray tan before vacation will ensure you look the part as soon as you arrive.

How many days before vacation should I get a spray tan?

Experts recommend having a spray tan two days before a big event. This gives time for the tan to develop properly and means you’ll have a day to adjust to the colour before you leave. Getting your tan too early may mean it has faded before you arrive.

How to keep your spray tan on vacation?

After spray tan care is very important to keep your spray tan looking fresh on vacation. After you’ve had your tan, avoid wearing tight clothes, perfume or deodorant. Make sure you wait at least 7 hours before having a shower, to allow your tan to develop properly. Whilst you are on vacation, make sure you moisturise every day after your shower, to prevent your tan from going patchy.

Does spray tan come off in pool?

If you want your tan to last, try and keep swimming in the pool or sea to short sessions. It is not actually the chemicals or chlorine in the water which fade your tan, it’s the fading which happens with too much water exposure.

If you’re looking for the perfect summer spray tan, we’d be glad to help. Check our at-home spray tan services, and if you’re ready for the ultimate summer glow just book online, download our app, or just contact a member of our team on 02071013534.

How to Keep Your Hair Healthy & Gorgeous in Summer

In the summer months, the combination of air-conditioning, sun, humidity, the sea and chlorine, can leave your  hair feeling dry and frazzled.

Here are our essential tips for keeping your locks healthy and gorgeous throughout summer:

How to keep your hair healthy and gorgeous in summer?

Try a Shorter Cut

Not only will this keep your hairstyle looking fresh and exciting, but removing split ends will get rid of the weakest, driest parts of your ‘do, leaving you free to enjoy the summer sun. A shorter cut may also help keep you feeling fresh and cool in the heat.

Avoid Heat Treatments

Even though hair straighteners may be your best friend for the rest of the year, relying on heat treatments in the summer months can leave your hair looking dry and damaged. If you struggle to minimise your use of heat treatments, consider opting for looks like a bun or ponytail that hide potential frizz. If you’re after curls or waves, try tying up wet hair overnight to create the style you want without using heat.

How to protect your hair in the hot weather?

Cover Up

Investing in a hat to protect your hair will work wonders. A wide brimmed hat will also protect your skin from potential sun damage.

Take a Pre-Dip Shower

If you’re planning on swimming this summer, make sure that your hair is protected by taking a shower first. This will prevent your hair from absorbing too much harmful saltwater or pool chemicals, preventing long-term damage.

Summer Hair Care

Use Leave-In Treatments

Making use of products such as leave-in conditioner and hair masks will keep your hair looking healthy and nourished. Particularly useful if your hair is feeling dry, these products will replenish your hair’s natural moisture. You can even make your own by combining ingredients such as coconut oil, avocado or olive oil.

Keep Grease at Bay

Although the summer sun can give you beautiful beachy waves, it can cause problems by increasing the amount of grease produced by your scalp. Find a shampoo that removes grease and grime to prevent your pores from becoming clogged and your hair from looking limp.  Kérastase Soleil Bain Après-Soleil shampoo is designed specifically for this.

The Ultimate Spray Tan Prep Guide

When it comes to getting a spray tan, there are a few ways you can get yourself prepped to ensure that it will be your best and most long-lasting spray tan yet.

First, let us explain how a spray tan actually works…

How does a spray tan work?

A spray tan is a form of sunless tanning which gives you the ultimate golden glow through a gentle mist being sprayed on your body. The mist has an ingredient called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which interacts with your body’s natural chemistry to create the perfect tan. Results usually last anywhere from 3-7 days, and the process is completely safe. Spray tans are usually applied in small booths using airbrushes which allow your body to get a nice, even coating.

Now you know the process, here’s a few of our essential tips to get yourself ready for your spray tan appointment:

How do I prepare for a spray tan?

To prepare, remove any unwanted body hair from your body and exfoliate. Doing this will allow the spray tan to adhere more evenly to your skin. It is also recommended that you don’t use any perfumes or deodorants before your spray tan as these can affect the application. You should also ensure to exfoliate and moisturise skin the day before, especially around the drier patches, such as ankles and elbows.

What should I wear before and after my appointment?

It is really important to make sure you are wearing loose, comfortable black clothing – including cotton underwear. This will make it less likely for the tan to transfer on to your clothing, and easier to remove if it does. Flip flops or open-toed shoes are a must as anything too tight may strip the tan off your feet before you even get home!

What do I do after my spray tan to prolong it?

Making sure you shower effectively is key to prolonging your tan. Use lukewarm water and try to avoid any products that will leave residue on the skin as they may strip the colour sooner than you would like. When getting out of the shower, be sure to pat your skin dry with your towel rather than rub to ensure you maintain that even glow.

And there you have it! A perfect, even glow without damaging sunrays.

How Often Should You Cut Your Hair

These days, it seems like everyone wants to get the ultra-shiny, healthy hair they see on Instagram. Sometimes this means trying to grow your hair length out or using products to help improve its thickness.

Whatever the specific style you’re trying to achieve, there are a few essential tips that can help you along the way.

To help you reach your #hairgoals, we’ve put together some expert answers to common hair maintenance questions, which will help you to get your hair in excellent condition in no time.

How often should you cut your hair if you want it to grow out/longer?

ladies hair cut at home

This is one of the most common hairstyling questions that we get asked in our profession. If you’re trying to grow your hair longer, it might seem counterproductive to book in for regular trims, but this is pretty essential.

A good haircut removes your split ends and damaged hair, which prevents your hair from splitting further and weakening your strands. You don’t want a choppy and uneven length that is caused by breakage, so a regular haircut is actually your best friend when growing your hair out.

How often should you cut your hair if you want it to be thicker?

Another common ask from our clients is to achieve thicker, healthier hair.

Just like growing your hair longer, this goal can be met by opting for regular haircuts. You should visit the hair salon approximately every three months to keep your hair in tip-top condition. By removing those ends with broken bonds you will not only prevent further breakage, but you will also achieve a blunter look at the end, which achieves the appearance of thickness.

How often should you trim your hair to maintain your hairstyle?

If you’re generally satisfied with your hair style and quality, including its length and thickness, then you should aim to head to the salon every six to eight weeks. This time frame allows your stylist to maintain your chosen cut without the ends growing too far out.

If you wait too long between appointments, your style could start to look messy and your ends might become more damaged, which could result in you needing more length taken off at your next appointment.

Brow Lamination – All You Need to Know

Believe it or not, thinner brows were once a hot trend, especially in the 90s and early 00s. And if you were someone who over-plucked in your youth, you may have experienced a lack of growth or thinner brows as a result.

So, how can brow lamination help?

brow lamination

Brow lamination is a noninvasive treatment which gives you a brow lift and is often used by people who have thinner eyebrow hair. The effect is only temporary but creates the appearance of a fuller, fluffier brow.

If you’re still wondering, ‘what are laminated brows?’, you only have to look on Instagram, using the hashtag #browlamination to see how quickly this treatment trend has caught on.

How long does eyebrow lamination last?

Laminated brows can last between six and eight weeks, providing you follow the after-care advice. Avoid baths or showers for 24 hours, or any other situations where your brows are likely to get wet. After that, you can wash and go back to using your usual skincare products without risking ruining the eyebrow lamination.

If you want to keep the wet look, you can apply a gel or serum.

How brow lamination works

Eyes and Brows

First the brows are cleaned and the client is asked about the shape they want. A lifting cream is applied to the brows, which gives them a lift similar to a brow sculpt. The brows are brushed into place, ensuring every hair follows the same direction of growth. A setting lotion is used to hold them in place. Then an oil is also applied to replace any lost moisture as a result of the chemicals used.

Then you have the option of having your brows tinted, tweezed or waxed, as needed.

Eyebrow lamination attempts to make your brows look as natural as possible, creating fluffy eyebrows and avoiding harsh lines.

For anyone concerned over the chemicals used, a patch test is always carried out beforehand.

If you’d like to book a brow lamination appointment, you can do so online or via the USPAAH app.

Gel vs Shellac nails – what’s the difference

Whether it’s a manicure or pedicure you’re after, there are many different options available to make sure you are perfectly polished on both fingers and toes. Gone are the days when nail polish only looked good for a couple of days before it started to chip, now you can have pristine nails for weeks at a time but it can be a minefield deciding which products are right for you. However, you may be wondering what the difference is between gel and Shellac nails, so here they are explained.

Gel vs Shellac Nails – the product and formulation difference

gel nails at home

Shellac is a brand in its own right created by the company CND and it has continued to revolutionise the nail industry since it began 34 years ago. Shellac is basically half-gel and half-nail polish, which is applied directly to the nail set with an LED lamp; however, it is thinner than most gel polishes and therefore gentler on nails.

The main difference between the two is the formulation as the key ingredient in gel nail polish is photoreactive meaning that it must be set under the LED or UV lamp. Gel nails also differ to Shellac in that a base coat is applied first and set followed by two coats of gel nail colour and a final top coat.

Gel vs Shellac Nails – the colour difference

There is a wider choice of colour available for gel nail polish because there are many, many brands to choose from including Gelish, OPI and Essie. There are only 132 shades of Shellac available whereas there are many, many more than this for gel.

Gel vs Shellac Nails – the removal difference

The other difference is that Shellac is easier to remove as it doesn’t need buffing or scraping to remove it.

Gel nails should be removed professionally as peeling them off can lead to flaky and dry nail damage. They are much harder to remove than Shellac and need to be professionally soaked for the best result and to protect the nail.

Would you like to find out more about the difference between gel and Shellac and our at home nail service? Simply give us a call on 02071013534 or email concierge@uspaah.com. Your Ultimate Guide to Russian Volume Extension lashes

Russian Volume Extension Lashes are an advanced form of eyelash extension which have recently dominated the lash extension world, and it’s easy to see why…

Although they are often used to create thicker and more voluminous lashes, Russian Volume Extensions can also be tailored to the subtler end of the spectrum. With Russian Volume Lashes, your look is completely customisable to your personal taste.

Although people with fine and short lashes benefit the most, those with longer and thicker natural lashes are still going to be benefit from this fantastic technique. Here’s everything you need to know:

What are Russian lashes?

eyelashes new set

Russian Volume Extensions Lashes are the latest multi-lash layering technique to take the health and beauty industry by storm. Capable of hosting whole ‘bouquets’ of eyelash extensions for every single natural lash, they create an incredible, glamorous look which is high in volume as well as being highly flexible.

Are Russian lashes mink? What are they made of?

For some reason, many people seem to think that Russian lashes are made of mink. In reality, Russian Volume Lashes are actually usually made from synthetic Mink. (Though there is a wide variety of ultra-fine synthetic fibres which are suitable for making them.)

Synthetic Mink tends to be the preference because they appear thicker and have greater body.

What’s the difference between Classic, 3D lashes and Russian lashes?

eyelash extensions at home

Classic lashes involve a single lash extension being applied to single natural lash on a 1:1 basis. Lashes which are described as 2D, 3D and so on up this ratio. So, with a 3D eyelash extension, you have three lash extensions being applied to a single natural lash.

Russian Volume Lashes take this to the ultimate level. With Russian Volume Lashes, you can have anywhere from 2 to 10 lash extensions for every natural lash. These can be varied not only by number but by the thickness of the extensions, allowing more or fewer extensions to be used as desired.

How long does it take to apply Russian Volume Eyelash Extensions?
Applying Russian Volume Extension Lashes requires a highly skilled and experienced professional. They usually take anywhere from between 1.5 to 4 hours to apply, depending on how much volume you want to add to your lashes. This is a process you don’t want to be rushed. Because of how intricate the whole process is, it’s also something that’s not to be tried DIY fashion.

How long do Russian volume lashes last? How to properly look after your Russian lash extensions?
If looked after properly, Russian Volume Lashes should last a little longer than your Classic lash extensions. Somewhere in the region of 4-6 weeks is common, though getting infills during that time is sensible if you want to ensure you keep your look strong.

Caring for your new lashes is fairly simple. All you need to do is:
• Avoid contact with water for the first 48 hours (no washing your face with hot water, swimming, steam rooms or saunas)
• Don’t wear mascara
• Use an oil-free make-up remover• Pat your lashes dry after washing your face rather than rubbing

How often do Russian lashes need infills?
To keep your Russian Volume Lashes looking their best, infills are usually a good idea every 2-3 weeks, though they can often last up to four weeks. This will depend, of course, on how rapidly your natural lashes fall out and are replaced. Regular infills also allow your beautician to check that your natural lashes are still healthy and happy underneath.
